A Brief History of Winchester Guns

Winchester Rifles and Shotguns was established by Oliver F. Winchester on February 20, 1866.  The first model produced under his name was the Model 1866 lever-action rifle .44 caliber rimfire.  There had been earlier rifles using lever action  including the Rocket Ball and Volition Repeater in 1848, Jennings Rifle (patent 1851), Smith and Wesson pistol, and Volcanic Repeating Arms (New Haven Arms Company and Henry Rifles).  When the design was improved by B. Henry Tyler (shop foreman at the New Haven Arms Company), the .44 caliber metalic rimfire cartridge became powerful enough to compete with the single shot rifles of the day.   Winchester Repeating Arms Company established itself as one of the world's leading firearms manufacturers of the world, and the subsequent rifles produced by Winchester are highly prized by collectors today.

About 1894 Winchester Rifles
The 1894 Winchester was the first Winchester rifle produced for smokeless powders and was the most successful centerfire rifle that the company ever produced.  This gun was developed under a patent by John M. Browning, and has withstood the tests of time.   The gun was chambered for the numerous caliber cartridges of the day, including the the .32-.40, .38-.55, .25-.35., 30-30 Winchester and the .32 Winchester Special.  The gun was available in several (5) different configurations (herein called 'Models').   The 1894 Winchester was produced from 1894 through the end of Winchester gun production in 2003.  During the first 70-year period prior to 1964, there were over 2,500,000 guns produced, with a total of 5,000,000 produced to date.    THIS APPRAISAL COURSE WILL PROVIDE VALUES FOR ALL '1894' WINCHESTER GUNS.
