Which Model of Rifle?

Step 1: Determine the Model of firearm

There are essentially three Models of the 1906 Winchester, with several variations within the 3rd model.  The first model was the '.22 Short-only Model' with a plain gumwood straight-grip stock, a flat shotgun-type buttplate, with a smooth forearm slide handle.  The next version was the 'Standard 1906 Model' and differed by being able to shoot interchangeably short, long or long-rifle bullets, and by having a grooved forearm (slide handle) .  The third model of 1906 was a more deluxe variety, called the "Model 1906 Expert."  This model differed in having a pistol-grip gumwood stock and a fluted smooth slide (forearm) handle.  The 'Expert' version was produced only between 1918 to 1924.  The 'Expert' model had three variations: blued, half-nickel or full nickel and could also have other added features.  

Use the Key to determine which gun you have.  Start at "a" and then select one of the "a" choices.  Follow the path through the key to determine your rifle type.  Then confirm with the overall descriptions.  These guns were very popular and some have gone through many hands.  Each owner had an opportunity to modify the gun, add parts, change parts, and remove features.  Be alert for such modifications, and remember that any modification from the original will undoubtedly decreased the gun's value.

Easy Key:

a. My gun has a 20" round barrel.  ---  Go to section b

a. My gun does not have a 20" round barrel.  You either do not have a 1906 Winchester or you have a modified or replacement barrel of some type.  The gun's value will be impacted.  If you still feel that your gun is an 1906 Winchester,--- Go to section  b.

b. Caliber is .22 and shoots only Short bullets---  Go to section c

b. Caliber is .22 and gun shoots Short, Long, and Long-rifle bullets ---   Go to section d

b. I can't tell  ---   Go to section e

c. Gun has a smooth pump forearm
     You have the earliest 1906 Model.  Check to be sure you have a serial number between 1 and 113,000.  Go to bottom of page and click on  section Step 2

Study the Outline of Features for possible modifications to the original rifle.

d1. There is a fluted smooth forearm.   You have an Expert Model 1906 Winchester.  Check to be sure the serial number is between 325,251 and 853,000 on both the lower tang and the bottom front of the receiver.  Go to Variations page

d2. There is a rounded smooth forearm.       You have one of early 'Standard Model 1906' productions.  The Winchester factory used their extra smooth forearms for the early Standard guns.  The serial number on your gun should be not much higher than 113,001 to 250,000 . d3. There is a 12-grooved slide handle.       You have a Standard Model 1906, Blued Frame Version of the 1906 Winchester.  The serial number should be between ~250,000 and 853,000 .  Go to bottom of page and click on  section Step 2

e. Look at the serial Number on the gun.  Determine the model of your gun by serial number.
     1-113,000 :  You have a First Model, number on receiver and lower tang .  Go to bottom of page and click on  section Step 2

     113,000-852,000:  You have either a Standard or Expert Model with takedown, numbers on receiver and lower tang   Go to bottom of page and click on  section Step 2

     535,540 - 649,951:  You have either a Standard or Expert Model with takedown, numbers on receiver and lower tang.  Go to bottom of page and click on  section Step 2
